A Two Towers Book Club

I’m so excited to invite you to continue the journey with us as we begin J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Two Towers.

Reading The Fellowship of the Ring together was genuinely one of the highlights of my winter. We had thoughtful conversations, wonderful insights from both kids and adults, and I think many of us were surprised by just how much there was to notice when we slowed down and read Tolkien in community instead of rushing through the story.

So we’re going to keep going!

This spring, we’ll be reading The Two Towers the same way—slowly, thoughtfully, and together. You’ll read on your own during the week, and then we’ll meet on Thursday nights at 7:30 CST to talk through what we’ve read. Discussions typically last about an hour and are open to both returning readers and anyone who wants to jump in and join us for this next leg of the journey.

You do not have to have read Book One with us to join. There’s plenty of room at the table for new faces!

The 2026 Reshelving Alexandria Reading Challenges are underway, and all are welcome in the royal reading court.

This year’s theme, Our Better Angels, invites us to read stories that remind us who we are at our best—stories of hope, humanity, forgiveness, and love for our families, neighbors, and communities.

To make sure every reader has a place at the table, we’ve created five full reading challenges:

• A 12-book challenge for light or returning readers

• A 52-book challenge for ambitious readers

• A Family Read-Aloud challenge

• A Children’s challenge

• A Teen challenge

Whether you read alone or together, on paper, on a screen, or with your ears, and whether you track your progress on the back of an old receipt or with a color-coded cross-referenced spreadsheet (you know who you are), there’s a challenge designed just for you!

Choose your challenge, print it out—or open our provided spreadsheet—and begin filling it in. There’s no rush, no pressure, and no wrong way to read here.

Our Facebook group currently has posts going for all 96 individual category prompts, if you’re looking for recommendations. My own list keeps growing—the suggestions are so good!

It’s time to kick off our most-anticipated event of the year—the Reshelving Alexandria Reading Challenges! 🎉🎉🎉

This year’s theme is Our Better Angels, and we’ve created five unique full challenges to inspire readers of all ages:

This year, two quotes have deeply moved me—they’ve dug their hooks into my heart, and I just can’t seem to shake them. The first is from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, which reminds us of the greater purpose in our lives: “Mankind was my business. The common welfare was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, benevolence, were all my business. The dealings of my trade were but a drop of water in the comprehensive ocean of my business!” Dickens’ words bring me to tears and challenge me to make sure my priorities are right.

The second quote (which I searched out after hearing a few words from it in a West Wing episode) comes from Abraham Lincoln’s first Inaugural Address, which speaks to the power of unity and love in even the most divided times: “We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.”

These words have inspired me to shape this year’s reading challenge around something dear to my heart—hope and humanity. The Our Better Angels Challenge will encourage us to read books that explore the depth of our shared experiences, enlarge our empathy, and help us grow in love for our families, neighbors, and communities. Let’s read this year with the hope of becoming more loving, compassionate, kind, and quick to forgive on this, our journey together.

You can split up the categories among family members and tackle it together, each person contributing their own unique picks. It’s a wonderful way to bond and explore stories while making the load lighter for everyone.

The Family Read-Aloud Challenge is one of my absolute favorites, and this year’s theme makes it even more meaningful. There’s something special about gathering your loved ones and sharing stories together—whether it’s reading aloud by the fire, listening to audiobooks on a road trip, or sharing cozy chapters at bedtime. The goal is simple: to create a shared storybook of memories, adding tales to your family’s collective language that inspire closeness, spark conversation, and provide a foundation of hope and truth as you face life’s challenges ahead.

Are you a college student with roommates? Why not invite them to join in on the fun? You might be surprised how quickly they’ll get hooked on the magic of a good story shared together.

Our Children’s Reading Challenge this year is an even dozen of categories, designed to inspire courage, teamwork, and self-reflection. Here’s a quick rundown on how to create a completed collage:

Save a blank template from here to your device either by downloading it or just saving to your camera roll. You will need to save all the book covers you need to add to the spots. Taking a screenshot of the book cover from a webpage such as Amazon or Goodreads and cropping it to include just the cover is the easiest way to do this. Depending on where you have found the cover image, you can just copy and paste, but worse-case scenario is to save to your computer. Add the blank template into Canva (a free graphic design platform) and enlarge it to fit onto a Facebook post blank template. Add all of your individual book covers, adjusting the sizes to fit in the blank spots as needed. Save your collage and share it with us!

This is not just for adults! We’ve had kids as young as 5 finish this challenge. If you are an adult, considering more than the 12 but finds the idea of 52 books absolutely overwhelming, we recommend doing a mix of adult and kids books. Even picture books will stretch you in ways you may not expect. Give it a go! We believe in you! The goal is to read more and more broadly, however that looks for you.
