Hanukkah at Valley Forge by Stephen Krensky, illustrated by Greg Harlin
During the harsh winter of 1777-1778 at Valley Forge in the American Revolutionary War, a Jewish soldier's Hanukkah celebration with a menorah highlighted the resilience and diversity within General George Washington's Continental Army. This event symbolizes religious freedom and unity, showcasing the principles that contributed to the birth of the United States.
The Hanukkah Family Treasury by Steven Zoroastrian and Rabbi Jodi Hessel, illustrated by Sarah Gibb
Among my top Hanukkah reads this year is a wonderful collection featuring short stories, poems, and blessings. An absolute must-read is the historic tale of Judith's bold act, which, I must emphasize, involves a beheading. While some stories are long and may require a couple of sittings, the collection as a whole offers a rich and diverse Hanukkah experience that shouldn't be missed.
Hanukkah: The Festival of Lights by Bonnie Bader, illustrated by Joanie Stone
Golden Books continues to enchant readers with their timeless holiday releases—simple yet captivating narratives, complemented by beautiful illustrations. These holiday books capture the essence of the season in an accessible and delightful manner.
Hanukkah: The Festival of Lights by Jenny Koralek
A boldly illustrated Hanukkah book for older kids, steering clear of a childish tone and embracing a more intense and adventurous vibe.
Songs of Chanukah by Jeanne Modesitt
Dive into the enchanting world of Hanukkah with a beautifully illustrated collection of songs, adorned with charming bunny illustrations. This delightful addition to my collection this year holds a special place, as it not only features the melodic tunes of the season but also provides insightful descriptions of the meaning and history behind each song. I’ve chosen to own this Hanukkah book, rather than merely borrowing it from the public library yet again, as I love pouring over its pages.
Song lyrics in both Hebrew and English with sheet music.
The Story of Hanukkah by Amy Ehrlich and Ori Sherman
Experience the enchanting story of Hanukkah through the captivating illustrations of Israeli artist Ori Sherman. Each visual masterpiece invites you to embrace the themes of hope, faith, and action, making these illustrations (in my opinion- don’t come for my head!) ideal candidates for framing.
The Tie Man's Miracle : A Chanukah Tale by Steven Schnur
A young boy hears of the Holocaust for the first time on the first night of Hanukkah when a visitor shares how he managed to lose his whole family. This reminds me of a Patricia Polacco story in the way it combines hard truths with love, family, and hope, and a miracle.
The Trees of the Dancing Goats by Patricia Polacco
A heartwarming narrative unfolds, centered on the essence of giving and compassion in the holiday season. An act of kindness between a Jewish and Christian family becomes a bridge, fostering understanding and unity despite differing cultural traditions. This tale eloquently portrays the beauty of goodwill, friendship, and the profound impact of sharing during festive times.
