Our Favorite Small Publishers
Small in production scale - not in heart or quality!
The mission of Reshelving Alexandria is to assist families in filling home libraries with good, true, and beautiful books.
By supporting the presses that are publishing (and republishing!) the types of books we love to see, we are able to support them in bringing more of the same to the table!
We encourage you to familiarize yourself with these publisher’s offerings as you curate your shelves. Please reach out if you have a publisher to recommend!
Bandersnatch Books is a publisher of treasures found off the beaten path, books that might otherwise be overlooked in the vast world of publishing. We have personally enjoyed reading through over half of their catalogue and look forward to reading more!
Beautiful Feet Books is a curriculum company that desires to ignite wonder through the best stories. The Obadiah series is a classic picture book series beloved by many and their living history books are highly regarded.
Bethlehem Books is a small, homegrown publishing company dedicated to restoring to children and families a treasury of wholesome, character-building literature. They have a large historical fiction collection that is highly respected. We have only ever read one title that we would NOT recommend: Flight into Spring by Bradbury (for domestic abuse).
Bushel and Peck Books has lovely books. Their generous spirit is shown in donating a new book every time a book is purchased. Be sure to check out their gorgeous poetry picture books!
The Good and the Beautiful has curated a list of books that meet their “good and beautiful” benchmarks. They are moving away from publishing their whole catalogue but will still be publishing the books that go with their language arts curriculum. We highly recommend watching for their now back out of print titles when shopping second hand.
HearthRoom Press brings beautiful out of print science and nature study books back to life through republishing. We greatly enjoyed our conversation with Kelly on Stories from the Ashes.
Hillside Education republishes marvelous historical fiction along with language arts resources for all ages.
Living Book Press provides unabridged reprints with original images. They also make all of their products available in digital form along with hard and soft covers. Listen to Anthony share about the publishing world on our podcast.
Moody Publisher had a golden era in the 60’s for kids fiction and it would seem they may also be in the midst of one now as well with new publishings, like The Tree Street Kids, and old with Patricia St. John and Lois Walfrid Johnson’s catalogues. We look forward to reading more of their new offerings this year!
New York Review Children’s Collection publishes a wide variety of titles for all ages. We especially appreciate their kids selection. Donkey-Donkey is a fun book about self-acceptance.
Purple House Press is known for delivering beautifully done reproductions of timeless classics that are gems in the literary world. Ambre petitioned for years for Bargain Bride and Three Knocks on the Wall to be reprinted and Amanda was influential in the Elizabeth Ripley artist studies being prioritized and made available again. We are so grateful to Jill for all her publishing efforts on behalf of our community!
Rabbit Room Press honors printing books that are beautiful inside and out. Their products are timeless and full of Christ-centered nourishment.
Riverbend Press is a small company that specializes in reprints of classics that are gorgeous heirloom quality volumes.
Smidgen Press has collector-worthy books that would be the highlight of any bookshelf. Mister Hermit Miser is a favorite of Ambre’s.
Story Warren Books foster imagination in the readers of their books. Sam and Josiah joined us on our podcast to talk about writing Jack Zulu and the Waylander's Key. Our whole team has loved both Jack Zulu and The Green Ember series.
Square Halo Books has been in the publishing business for over 25 years. Their commitment to the literary world shines through their rich books.
Yesterday’s Classics offers classics that have stood the test of time. They produce a rich collection of books in paperback print-on-demand.
The idea of adding good, true, and beautiful books to your home library can be overwhelming when 4 million new book titles are released each year. We hope that sharing some of our favorite publishers will ease the obstacle of sorting through the MASSIVE catalog of books available.
*It should be noted that we haven’t read all of the books available from these publishers but we find these companies a solid place to start as you build your home libraries.*
