A Hobbit Book Club
When we began The Lord of the Rings back in January, I promised that if everyone enjoyed it, we’d spend the end of summer reading The Hobbit together.
Well... here we are!
It’s been such a joy experiencing this community read Tolkien together. We’ve had children making observations that stopped the adults in their tracks, conversations that wandered from loyalty to friendship to stewardship to courage, and plenty of moments where someone noticed something the rest of us had somehow missed.
Now it’s time to go back to the hole in the ground where it all began!
The Hobbit may have been written first, but it has a very different feel than The Lord of the Rings. It’s lighter, funnier, and a little more whimsical, but don’t let that fool you! Tolkien is already laying the foundations for so many of the themes we’ll recognize from The Lord of the Rings—ordinary courage, mercy, greed, providence, and the surprising ways one small person can change the course of history.
We’ll read a few chapters each week and gather on Thursday evenings to discuss them together. Whether you’ve read The Hobbit many times or have never ventured beyond Bag End, I’d love for you to join us.
